2024 Design Trends

Bright + Bold

I remember when I started out as an agency designer, I was so so scared of color. Minimalism was in big time. It was 2013. While it took a while to embrace the change, I'm really digging how unapologetic some brands are being with color. There's something really special about mixing this with other design conventions, too. Love a good electric palette mixed in with some basic neutrals or other traditional choices. High-five to this kind of confidence.

New wave

I've heard this style described as "new wave"—I think that's fitting. Really, any excuse to get me sketching in procreate before designing a thing is a special opportunity for me. From clean vectorized finishes, to less polished sketchy linework, I'm digging all the emerging illustrative styles in newer brands. If it looks like it could live in the New Yorker, you can bet I'm buying it. I've found it's best suitable for brands that aim to be really confident yet playful, and I'm so down to see more of this outside of the typical industries it's known for.

maximalism

As a lover of DADA it's no surprise I am fascinated by maximalism. This can mean so many things. But for me, the anti-design reflection in maximalism is especially fun. I've always loves collage-inspired design, textural elements, multimedia, and movement with typography and shape. It's a fun challenge to break convention, it's the ever-evolving challenge all designers have. It's really interesting in the process as this style allows for TONS of happy accidents. I'm always looking to these types of design development for inspiration even when im stuck working in more conventional parameters. High-five to this kind of chaos.
the eras

I love all the eras... The 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s... even Y2K brings a fondness to my heart. It makes me wonder what our current state is going to look like from design perspectives in the future. Anyway, I know it's not the most popular opinion, but I'm never gonna get sick of the nostalgia machine spitting out renewed trends from yesteryear. Call me cheesy, whatever, cheese is cool
sustainability

As an avid fan of refill systems, compostable packaging, thrifting, recycling and the war against single-use plastic, I want to make sure that while I'm humoring myself in this project about "trends" I do NOT consider sustainability a trend. It is a standard. But there are trends that are stemming from this value by re-thinking how we design for these shifts in culture, voice, and most obviously—packaging. I deeply value any opportunity to support a better future with any identifiable efforts I can make in my lifestyle, and through design.
thanks for your eyes :)

I have no idea what I'm doing most of the time. It's pretty terrifying and liberating all at the same time. I just wanted to spend some time really exploring what aesthetics are working well, understand why, and have an excuse to play around with some of these styles. All designs in this project are fictitious—an attempt on my part to create a narrative for myself through these various lenses. Thanks for takin a look!
